If you’ve somehow stumbled onto this website, I welcome you. When I started this page in 2025, I did it to chronicle my many outdoors excursions for myself more than anything. I don’t advertise the page or even share any of the articles, but I also don’t try to hide it so anyone with an internet connection could potentially find their way here. If you’re one of those people, you’ve truly found a needle in a haystack.
With what has been a long career in the outdoors, hunting, and conservation, I’ve had to write for my job an awful lot covering topics ranging from inspiring members at the front of annual reports, to testimony for Congressional committees, to how to kill a buck during the late season. While I enjoy writing, it’s often not for my own purposes and so I decided while I’m still physically capable of roaming the hills and rivers and motivated to chronicle those adventures, a personal blog might be a good idea. In other words, this is for me first and foremost, and if I’m lucky my wife will read a few stories and my son will find them interesting someday. Longer term, I envision myself reading these again when I’m no longer able to create new memories, and from a nursing home somewhere I can relieve some of the outdoors adventures that have shaped my life, and maybe it will keep me upright for a little longer.
I started a blog several years ago called Whitetail Writer. That was in my early 30’s when I was obsessed with deer and chasing mature bucks. I also had the crazy idea that it would help me land a job in the hunting industry. Careful what you wish for, I suppose. Those stories were openly shared and I parlayed that experience into getting paid to write a few articles for magazine that people actually heard of. Unfortunately, I somehow lost that site and all the stories that were posted on it due to a billing mixup if I remember correctly. That knocked a lot of steam out of me and with the writing I was already doing for my job, I just gave it up. I’ll try to retell some of those earlier stories here and will do my best to keep them accurate considering my mind surely isn’t what it once was.
I intend to write more freely here and share some opinions that I wouldn’t otherwise given my role as a national conservation organization leader. I believe I’m still allowed to have personal opinions, right? The lines are so blurred these days so I’ll try to keep myself out of trouble understanding the older one gets the lips can get a little looser.
I’m not sure why anyone outside of my family would care about my stories, but if you did wander into my virtual hunting and fishing camp, I hope you find something you like. I invite you to browse the various categories and I welcome any feedback you have. You can email me at [email protected] if you’re so inclined.
