I was excited to work on my first ever trad bow hunting arrow setup today. I’ve been shooting all year and testing various arrow and broadhead configurations and weights. I finally decided on the following:

  • Gold Tip Traditional arrows in 500 spine at 29”
  • 100 grain insert weight
  • 125 grain Magnus Black Hornet Ser-Razor Broadhead
  • Total arrow weight of 526 grains (10.1 grains per pound)

This formula results in an ideal grains per pound arrow weight for hunting. The broadheads shoot great and it’s a heavy enough arrow to get the job done but no so heavy it shoots a rainbow trajectory.

I opted to go with Marion Center High School colors with a green barred cock feather and the other two in gold all attached to a white 7” arrow wrap. The Stingers colors seem like good luck this year since I’m coaching football and we’re currently 4-0. Since I graduated there in 1992 and maintained a connection to the school it just seemed an obvious fit.

I shot the arrows a few times each this evening and they seem to be in good form. I wish I was a little more consistent but that will come with time and experience. I feel pretty confident I can get the job done from 15 yards and closer if given the opportunity. The season is now just two weeks away so I’m going to find out soon enough.
