A new coffee mug isn’t something that subtly happens for the serious coffee drinker. If you’re as serious about the drink as I am, switching from one cup to another can be an agonizing ordeal. A person’s morning coffee mug might be the most consistent and reliable thing in their life.
I estimate the mug I’m moving on from is about three years old, maybe a little more. It’s a pretty basic, mass-manufactured model that says “Home” and “Indiana University of Pennsylvania.” It was a good mug, but recently I’ve been feeling like it was time to move on. As it turns out, Angela was looking for a new mug as well so it became a priority item when attending the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival on Sunday.
This mug caught my eye early in the visit but I didn’t want to make a hasty decision. What stood out to me was it reminded me of spots on a trout without it actually being spots on a trout. I appreciate the arts and subtlety and those things combined to create this mug. After walking the show I returned to the booth hoping the mug would still be there, and it was. At first I thought $35 was a little steep but when I factored in how it called to me and that it was one of a kind, I parted with the money.
I used the mug for the first time this morning. I’m happy with my decision. I thought about trout.
