Another day of scattered thunderstorms. It has been a consistent theme so far this summer, but as a fisherman that likes deep flowing streams, I’m not complaining. The problem though is the potential of getting caught in the rain, and I already did that once in a big way earlier this year. I was trapped under the trees during a torrential downpour for about an hour and emerged soaked to the bone. Despite my excitement to add a little weight to my gear and chase some warm water fish, I knew it might be a short excursion due to the forecast.

It looked like I had two, maybe three hours to fish based on the radar and hourly forecast so I went to Yellow Creek and made the long 20-minute hike to the bottom of the reservoir owned by the Central Indiana County Water Authority. This time I was toting heavier artillery with my Orvis Clearwater 5 wt and some larger streamers, top water bass flies, and woolly buggers. The water at 72° was now too warm to target trout.

I fished below the spillway for a good 30 minutes with no luck. I had one light take, but I’m not sure it was a game fish. I could hear thunder rumbling in the distance and figured if I wanted to get to my favorite pool I needed to keep moving.
